You must send your actual passport, which must have at least 12 months of validity remaining and one blank visa page.

US Passport Service

For U.S. citizens to travel outside the country, including visits to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, you will need a passport to leave and enter the United States. Since June 2009, visitors to Mexico and Canada have also been required to have a passport or a passport card as proof of U.S. citizenship, whether you travel air, car, boat, or by foot. Cruise ship travelers are subject to the same strict requirements. Children are required to have their own passports, and cannot travel without one, even if accompanied by a parent. So if you're planning a trip that takes you anywhere outside the U.S. border, get a passport before you go.
